Wie lassen sich alte Röhrenfernseher, rosa Stoffstücke und schwarzes Kunsthaar, Wortfetzen, um sich selbst rotierende Figuren und feine Zeichnungen zusammenbringen?
All diese Elemente ordnet Suah Im in ihren raumgreifenden Installationen Fragen nach mensch­licher Identität und dem Individuum in der Gesellschaft unter. Hierfür erschafft die Künstlerin fortwährend neue, räumlich- und materialgebundene Zusammenhänge. Beständig ist ein voraus­ gehender, zeichnerischer Prozess, meist mit Aquarell, Bleistift und Tusche, über den sich Suah Im jede Arbeit auf dem Papier erschließt und so in eine intime Verbindung mit späteren, gestal­ter­ischen Objekten und Symbolen tritt. Die Zeichnungen verbleiben jedoch keine vorbereitenden Skizzen, sondern werden häufig Teil der finalen Arrangements. Dass die Künstlerin zudem auf ­Gegenstände wie Besen oder Strumpfhosen zurückgreift, unterstreicht die Verankerung ihrer Themen im Alltag der Menschen.

FRISCHZELLE_31: SUAH IM

How can old tube televisions, pieces of pink fabric, and black artificial hair, scraps of words, figures rotating around themselves, and delicate drawings be combined?

In her expansive installations, Suah Im subordinates all of these elements to questions of human identity and the individual in society. To this end, the artist continually creates new spatial and material contexts. What remains constant is a preliminary process of drawing, mostly with watercolor, pencil, and India ink, by which Suah Im develops each work on paper and thus enters into an intimate connection with subsequent creative objects and symbols. The drawings don’t remain preparatory sketches but instead often become part of the final installation. The fact that the artist also makes use of objects such as a broom or tights underscores that her themes are anchored in people’s everyday lives.
