Bei »Come Come Upward« konstruiert Suah Im eine Spaltung zwischen irdisch-menschlicher und himmlisch-göttlicher Sphäre. An der hohen Wand erstreckt sich ein monumentales Gebilde aus Vorhängen, deren Farbverlauf von Rosa zu Blau die beiden Sphären widerspiegelt. Die Vorhänge sind durch Kunsthaar verbunden, von einem gigantischen Springseil umfangen und nach oben zunehmend mit Kunstharz verhärtet.
Auf dem Boden platziert die Künstlerin einen übergroßen Gymnastikball gespickt mit Wollhaaren. An ein Gitter geknotet verhindern diese die Bewegung des Balls. Über seine Farbe und Haare verkörpert er einen menschlichen Kopf – Ursprung von Sorgen, aber auch Willenskraft.
Das Springseil steht für Ertüchtigung und Selbstzentrierung, während Suah Im das Vorhanggebilde vor dem Kopf als Symbol für Grenzüberwindung und das Streben nach Höherem sieht.

In Come Come Upward, Suah Im constructs a division between the earthly-human and heavenly-divine spheres. A monumental structure of curtains sprawls across the wall, their color gradient from pink to blue reflecting these two spheres. The curtains are connected with artificial hair, surrounded by a gigantic skipping rope and gradually hardened with synthetic resin towards the top.
The artist places an oversized exercise ball covered in woolen hair on the floor. Knotted to a grid, they prevent the ball from moving. Its color and hair embody a human head – the source of worry but also willpower.
The skipping rope represents exercise and self-centredness, while Suah Im views the curtain in front of the head as symbol for overcoming boundaries and striving for greater heights.

Suah Im setzt Leichtigkeit von Stoff mit menschlichen Schwächen gleich. Daher verhärtet sie Textilien, besonders Vorhänge, mit farblosem Kunstharz. Diese assoziiert die Künstlerin neben Sichtschutz mit Selbstermächtigung. Lange lebten Suah Im und ihre Schwester in einer Souterrainwohnung in Bucheon. Ein instabiles Fenster gab beim Blick nach Außen nur die Füße Vorbeigehender frei, während diese das ganze Zimmer sehen konnten. Ein Vorhang bot Sichtschutz, jedoch keinen Schutz vor Einbruch. Eines Tages versuchte jemand, über das Fenster in die Wohnung zu gelangen. Suah Ims Schwester schreckte den Eindringling ab. Den Impuls, aus der Ausnahmesituation zu fliehen, zeigt der Film »Ausweg«. Von ihr empfundene Schwäche verbindet Im mit zartem Vorhangstoff. Seitdem verwendet sie Stoffverhärtung symbolisch für die Überwindung von Unterlegenheit.

Suah Im equates the lightness of fabric with human weaknesses. She therefore hardens textiles, especially curtains, with colorless synthetic resin. The artist associates these with privacy, but also self-empowerment. Suah Im and her sister lived in a basement flat in Bucheon for a long time. An instable window allowed the view outside only at foot height of passers-by while they could see the whole room. A curtain provided privacy, but no protection against intrusion. One day, someone tried to break into the flat through the window. Suah Im’s sister scared the intruder off. The impulse to flee from the emergency situation is shown in the film Ausweg. Im links her perceived weakness to fragile curtain fabric. Since then, she employs hardening of fabric as a symbol for overcoming inferiority.
